BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA (Forbes)  – Given Apple’s annual update schedule, everyone has a rough idea of when new iPhones will be released. But now we may have exact dates for the iPhone 7.

The ever reliable @evleaks has (in his own words) “confirmed” pre-orders for the iPhone 7 will begin on September 9th, with a subsequent release date of September 16th. From this we should expect Apple to schedule the phone’s official announcement for September 7th – Apple does love Wednesdays.

So how much stock do we put in this? As mentioned, @evleaks (aka Evan Blass) has a remarkable track record over the last few years and as such I’d suggest “a lot” – even if his dates do represent a slightly faster time to market for Apple than last year.

For comparison, in 2015 Apple announced the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus on September 9th (a Wednesday) with pre-orders opening on September 12th but handsets didn’t go on sale until September 25th.

Interestingly, with the key specifications and most controversial features all known, the biggest remaining question is: What the new iPhones will be called?

As a seemingly more minor release designed as a third evolution of the iPhone 6, news broke recently that it could be called the ‘iPhone 6SE’ rather than the iPhone 7 – which would make a lot of sense.

Furthermore it ties in with Apple’s much anticipated plans for the 10th anniversary of the original iPhone in 2017 where talk of a complete redesign has already leaked. Such a handset was never likely to be called the iPhone 7S.

Either way, it’s time for iPhone fans to get saving. Whether it’s for what Apple has lined up for us in September or instead to prepare for the company’s much more ambitious iPhone plans in 2017.
