(FORBES) – It has been a sports year for the ages with epic Olympic performances, historic championship comebacks and the end of the longest title drought in pro sports.

It was also the end of the road for several of the most dominant athletes of the past two decades as Kobe Bryant, Peyton Manning, Alex Rodriguez and Tim Duncan all called it quits.

Duncan and Rodriguez were not highly marketable athletes (for very different athletes), but Bryant and Manning worked with dozens of brands during their careers as two of the most marketable athletes in their respective sports.
