Florida Tech Panthers Women’s Tennis Posts Strong Performances At Tampa Invitational

In singles, FIT picked up eight wins in 15 matches

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Tech has posted some strong performances so far in its season opening weekend at the Tampa Invitational.

FIT dropped three of four doubles matches in the first round of doubles at the invite. Meritt Rabson and Larissa Kiyoku fell to Tampa’s combination of Lozo and Hewland by a 8-3 score.

Alahna Reto and Mariana Castaneiras dropped an 8-3 match to UT’s Stephens and Nice. UT’s Beyes and Sowell got the better of Erin Egoroff and Paloma Vela 8-5.

Kayla Hergott and Lauren Stuckey picked up an 8-5 win for the Panthers, defeating Florida Southern’s Stanford and Hunter.

The Panthers struggled in Round 2 against FSC. Devrimci and Widnova shutout Rabson and Kiyoku 8-0.

The Mocs’ Popovic and Skymberg beat Reto and Castaneiras 8-3, while Asis and Hesse defeated Hergott and Walter by the same score. Egoroff and Vela turned around their first round performance by knocking off FSC’s Rionda and Stepnik by an 8-6 score.

In third round of doubles play, the Panthers dropped two of three matches against St. Petersburg College. Momose and Chishaki defeated Reto and Rabson 8-4.

Castaneiras and Kiyoku lost a close one to Ruiz and Worlds 9-8. Egoroff and Vela closed out doubles with a 8-2 victory over Diaz and Montoya.

“This was a great opportunity for me to see several doubles combinations compete during this round robin format,” said head coach Bill Macom.

“The girls definitely started out a bit nervous but were able to settle down in the second and third rounds.

In the singles rounds, FIT picked up wins in eight of the 15 matches, including five two-set victories.

Hergott defeated UT’s Hewland in two sets 6-3, 6-3 to open Round 1. Egoroff picked up a three-set win against Nice 6-4, 4-6, 10-7. Stucky knocked off Beyes 6-3, 3-6, 10-5 and Rabson controlled Napers by a score of 6-2, 6-3.

Against FSC, Reto dealt Devrmci a 6-2, 6-1 loss. Stucky beat Hunter 6-1, 6-4 and Vela topped Hessee in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 10-2 before Walter closed out the day defeating Stanford 6-2, 6-4.

“I am very pleased with our level of play in the singles,” Macom stated. ” The matches were pretty even with several going into tiebreakers.”
