Tomberlin makes consecutive saves in PK session

DELAND, FLORIDA – Brevard County in soccer has become what the Miami area is to football. On Friday morning, the Merritt Island Lady Mustangs gave the county another state championship in consecutive days.
Following West Shore Wildcats boys Class 2A title win on Thursday, the lady Mustangs defeated Jacksonville Stanton 4-2 on penalty kicks for a 1-0 victory and their second state title since 2010.
Head coach Scott Carswell’s team finished the season unbeaten (20-0-1) and cashed in on their fourth straight trip to the state’s final four.
The goalkeepers and defense stole the show in this Class 3A title matchup.
Stanton’s senior goalkeeper Lauryn Harold and the Mustangs sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Tomberlin were terrific throughout the scoreless regulation and overtime sessions.
But Tomberlin got the better end result of Harold when it mattered most, during penalty kicks and pulled off a rare feat making back-to-back saves on Stanton shooters in the penalty kick session.
Tomberlin made one stop to her right, then to her left. The second save gave her squad a chance to go up by two and came on a shot where Tomberlin appeared to read the kick the entire way.
The sophomore goalkeeper told reporters following the game that the Stanton shooter telegraphed the shot well before she even took it.
Following Tomberlin’s first save in the penalty kick session, the Mustangs Kelli Lindquist just missed the upper right corner, but Tomberlin would answer back with a second consecutive stop.

The Mustangs led 3-1 and following a goal by Stanton, to cut it to 3-2, sophomore Jordan Michaels approached the ball as if she were born to make this kick in this situation.
Not known for her goal scoring prowess on the pitch, the Mustangs defender who scored twice all season on seven shots, stretched, then placed the ball on the hash mark.
Michaels then promptly buried a beauty in the upper right corner to clinch the Class 3A title. The celebration was deservedly wild as the ladies piled on each other screaming for joy.

The Mustangs, as they have done all season, played great defensively and the good news is, all four starters return next season for head coach Scott Carswell.
Madeline Miller, Jordan Michaels and Sydney Clarke are just sophomores while Sydney Glass is a junior.
The quartet, with help off the bench from seniors Breanne Dodier and freshman Catherine Paroline, allowed just four goals all season.
The Mustangs should be favored to repeat next season which would match the feat of the Lady Hawks from Viera in 2015 and 2016 by winning back-to-back championships.

With a young team, twelve of the players on the roster are either freshman or sophomores.
Only three of the players that played on Friday are seniors, as the Mustangs had only three juniors.
On the lady’s side, the Melbourne Bulldogs are the standard in terms of winning state titles. Starting in 1987, the Bulldogs own five of them (2009 (6A), 2010 (5A), 2013 (4A), 2014 (4A)) and 43-18 in state tournament play.
It’s evident the youth soccer boom witnessed on the Space Coast throughout the late 1990’s and 2000’s is producing amazing results at the high school level.
Since 2010 alone, the ladies from Brevard County have won seven state titles. (Melbourne 2010, 2013, 2014), (Merritt Island 2010, 2017) (Viera 2015,2016)
With fields and leagues still packed all over the county and younger players producing at high levels for the high schools, the trend of winning championships looks to continue.
Congratulations Merritt Island!
