BREVARD COUNTY • FLORIDA — In an effort to promote efficient water use while maintaining healthy landscapes year-round, the St. Johns River Water Management District has established mandatory watering restrictions for both residential and nonresidential properties.
These regulations outline specific watering days, times, and durations based on property type and address.
The watering schedule varies depending on the time of year:
Daylight Saving Time: Second Sunday in March – First Sunday in November
● Odd-numbered or no address homes: Wednesday & Saturday
● Even-numbered address homes: Thursday & Sunday
● Nonresidential properties: Tuesday & Friday
Eastern Standard Time: First Sunday in November – Second Sunday in March
● Saturday, Sunday, and Tuesday
Additionally, watering is never permitted between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and irrigation should be limited to no more than one hour per zone.
The St. Johns River Water Management District has established mandatory watering restrictions for residential and non-residential properties to promote efficient water use while maintaining healthy landscapes year-round. These regulations outline specific watering days, times, and durations based on property type and address. Why Are Restrictions Necessary?
Water conservation is essential due to the high public water demand, which accounts for approximately 626 million gallons per day in the District’s 18-county region. Over 50% of residential water use goes toward landscape irrigation. With freshwater being a limited resource, these restrictions help delay costly alternative water supply projects.
Water Responsibly
Residents are urged to water only when necessary by checking the weather and assessing their lawns for signs of dryness. Indicators that grass needs water include:
● Grass blades folding in half lengthwise on at least one-third of the yard.
● Grass blades appearing blue-gray.
● Footprints remaining visible on the lawn for several minutes after walking on it.

Exemptions and Special Cases
While restrictions apply to all water sources, including private wells and pumps, exceptions exist:
● Newly planted grass or fertilization applications may require additional watering.
● Gardens are considered agricultural crops and can be watered before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. without day restrictions.
● Hand-held hoses, micro-spray, micro jet, drip, or bubbler systems may be used at any time.
● The District does not restrict reclaimed water, though local governments may impose their own rules.
Enforcement and Additional Information
Many local governments enforce these restrictions through ordinances. A full list of participating municipalities and additional details can be accessed online.
