BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Florida Supreme Court ordered a new sentencing hearing for Brandon Lee Bradley, a death row inmate convicted of fatally shooting Brevard County Deputy Barbara Pill in 2012.
The Florida Supreme Court ordered on Thursday a new sentencing hearing for Bradley because the ruling from the jury that recommended death voted 10-2, which was not unanimous.
The 12-person jury convicted Bradley in 2014 in only 90 minutes of the first-degree murder of Deputy Pill.
If the new jury’s recommendation isn’t unanimous for the death penalty, Bradley will receive life without parole.
After Bradley was sentenced to death in 2014, Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey said, “We are pleased with today’s sentence. Barbara was an incredible deputy, mother, wife and friend and we will never forget her. Justice was rendered today and we hope that it is carried out swiftly. We pray that today actions will finally bring peace and closure to Barbara’s family.”
Deputy Pill, 52, was shot and killed by burglary suspect Bradley during a traffic stop on a residential street in Melbourne on March 6, 2012.
A patrol car dashboard camera showed Deputy Pill ordering Bradley to get out of his vehicle, and when he refused, she reached into his vehicle to turn off the ignition. Bradley then shot Deputy Pill five times.
Andria Kerchner, the accomplice in the death of Deputy Pill, was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2014 on charges including accessory after the fact of first-degree murder, theft and burglary.
Deputy Pill had been in law enforcement for 30 years and served 15 years with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Department.
