BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Crime Scene Unit for The Brevard County Sheriff’s Department is comprised of 10 members.
There are one Sargent and nine Crime Scene Investigators that respond to a multitude of call including death calls, homicides, suicides, over dosses, natural deaths, burglaries, and sexual assault crime scenes.
On today’s episode of ‘Riding Shotgun,’ BCSO CSI Philip Miranda takes us through his day, discusses what a CSI does and how much education is required.
Miranda also examines a billiards ball for fingerprints that was used to break a window so that a suspect could enter a home.
After finding computer science a boring major and watching a few CSI shows on television, Miranda researched the field and decided investigating crime scenes was for him. He graduated from UCF with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a minor in anthropology and he also earned a certificate in Crime Scene Investigation.
Miranda added 16 more weeks of intensive training with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Department and then attended the University of Tennessee National Forensic Academy where they learned about and practiced everything from photography to blood splatter.
Miranda even attended the infamous body farm where Crime Scene Investigators go to learn about the different intervals of body decomposition.
Ultimately says Miranda, “The goal of the Crime Scene team is to help reach a conclusion to the case,” and with the nearly six percent drop-in crime statistics from 2016 to 2017 recently announced here on Space Coast Daily TV by Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey, it’s obvious many cases have reached a conclusion on the Space Coast.
