Gemini Elementary School in Brevard County clinched victory with its Three-Course Wonton Meal with Whole Milk Shooters recipe at the fifth annual Gridiron Cooking Challenge.
Hosted by the Dairy Council of Florida in partnership with the NFL, the cooking challenge is a fun-filled food competition for elementary and middle school students throughout Florida and is part of the Fuel Up to Play 60 program.
The event took place on May 5 at EverBank Field in Jacksonville with special guest Barry Church, safety for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“Each team demonstrated the versatility and nutritional value of dairy products in a creative way – congratulations to the winning team, Gemini Elementary, and to all of the finalist schools who participated,” said Teresa Moran-Wiebe, Dairy Council of Florida, Director of Youth Wellness.
Gemini Elementary students Mary Meyers, Lila Schoolfield, Corbin Brown and Max Carl along with their program advisor, Billy Bechtol, won four iPad minis, Publix Aprons cooking classes, and a prize pack for their school valued at up to $2,500, among other prizes.
The students’ creations were judged by a select group of distinguished professionals including Florida Dairy Farmer, Meghan Austin; director of performance nutrition for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Mindy Black; and regional director for Publix, Steve Walker.

Four finalist schools from Florida competed at the event, each preparing a recipe that highlighted dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt. Students from Roosevelt Elementary (Brevard County), Pinemount Elementary (Columbia County) and Bunnell Elementary (Flagler County) also participated.
The Gridiron Cooking Challenge event is created and supported by the Dairy Council of Florida and is part of Fuel Up to Play 60, an in-school nutrition and physical activity program launched by the National Dairy Council and NFL to help encourage today’s youth to lead healthier lives.
