BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Institute of Technology junior Brandon Ziarno, entering his third year this fall as a backup quarterback on the Florida Tech Panthers football team, has been suspended indefinitely from all team activities following his arrest Friday in Melbourne on three marijuana-related charges.
Ziarno, 21, was charged by Melbourne police with possession of cannabis over 20 grams, possession of cannabis with intent to sell or deliver and possession/use of drug paraphernalia.
“The suspension will remain in effect for at least the duration of an investigation by Athletics Department officials, and pending the conclusion of proceedings at the Melbourne Police Department,” said Daniel Supraner, Director of Athletic Communications of Florida Tech Athletics.
“Outcomes could include Ziarno’s permanent removal from the team and revocation of his athletic scholarship.”
Ziarno remains a student at Florida Tech. The Office of Student Affairs has begun the university adjudication process.
“We are just at the start of this process, but this is a matter that I, Coach Englehart and university leadership take very seriously,” said Athletics Director Bill Jurgens.
“We understand both the gravity of the charges and that Brandon is at a critical juncture in his young life, and we will move forward accordingly.”
