And eating 500 calories a day can only be allowed in extreme cases of medical necessity when the patient remains under constant supervision.

It sounds crazy, but the current fad literally calls people to drink clay to lose weight. The idea behind this is that clay removes toxins and fills you up to suppress hunger and help you eat less. Whatever other things the advocates of this diet might claim, there is no scientific evidence whatsoever that detox diets work in general, let alone one that has you eating clay.

While it’s true that some types of clay have been used in alternative medicine, these remedies are usually applied topically. When you actually ingest clay, it damages the lining of your digestive tract and prevents nutrient absorption. This can cause nutritional deficiencies and severe digestive problems. Doing this often can cause great damage to your gut, which will affect your health on every level. And that influence won’t be good in the least.
