WASHINGTON DC – I was honored to represent the state of Florida Wednesday as I joined approximately 50 other Sheriffs from around the country on the steps of our Capitol to collectively encourage the members of Congress to take action on immigration reform.

In addition to announcing our purpose during a press event at the Capitol, the Sheriffs also participated in a round-table discussion at the White House that was hosted by the Office of Inter-Governmental Affairs.

The purpose of the round-table was to discuss the necessity for additional collaboration between local, state and federal law enforcement officers in securing our country’s borders while also strengthening interior enforcement of illegal aliens who penetrate our borders and move to our interior communities.

Subsequent to the round-table discussion, we met with President Donald Trump who again committed his support to law enforcement and our efforts to keep our communities and country safe!

The Sheriffs and I will also be taking part in individual meetings tomorrow with members of the House and Senate to encourage them to take action in strengthening our borders, enhancing collaboration between local, state and federal law enforcement agencies and streamlining the process for those who wish to enter our country legally, thus giving them a pathway to citizenship.

Our message to Congress, the President and Vice President was simple: American Sheriffs want immediate action by Congress in passing meaningful legislation to better secure our nation’s borders while also enhancing interior security of our communities.

Like every American, Sheriffs are deeply concerned by the Opioid Crisis that has impacted each of us as we are all tasked with protecting our communities against Gangs, Human Traffickers, and the Drug Cartels who continue to flood our country and target our citizens.

Without true border security, we can never have Homeland Security and the ability to protect our nation.
