BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – Royal Palm Charter School, located at 7135 S. Babcock Street in Palm Bay, announced the adaption of a year-round school model that will begin with the upcoming 2019-2020 school year.

Starting on July 16, 2019, and ending on June 4, 2020, the new school schedule provides an alternative to the traditional public school calendar.

Royal Palm Charter School is a Brevard County Public School of Choice enrolling all students for Voluntary Prekindergarten through Elementary and Middle School grades (VPK–8th).

The School’s Core Knowledge Program ensures every student receives an education that is rich in math, science, history, geography, art, and literature. The content-rich curriculum, family focus, personal attention and small school setting are key to a caring culture that nurtures academic excellence.

Located in east Palm Bay on South Babcock Road, the School will become the only year-round public school in Brevard County.

“Last year we did a survey of parents and teachers and had overwhelming support for changing to a year-round schedule,” said Shannon Shupe, Principal of Royal Palm Charter School.

“Last year we did a survey of parents and teachers and had overwhelming support for changing to a year-round schedule,” said Shannon Shupe, Principal of Royal Palm Charter School.

“The year-round schedule offers more frequent breaks while providing the same number of school days as the traditional school schedule. We believe the change will enhance learning acceleration and remediation for our students and give our teachers the opportunity to expand our curriculum.”

The school will be implementing the 45-15 year-round plan, the most popular form of year-round education where students attend school for 45 days and then get 15 days off.

The usual holiday breaks are also still built into this calendar.

Studies show that lessening the duration of the traditional summer break decreases the “summer slide” and allows teachers to start presenting new material right away and spend less time reviewing content from the previous year.

Schools with more frequent extended breaks have also been shown to reduce burnout for both students and teachers.

The break schedule for the upcoming 2019-2020 school year is:

• Fall 3-week break (Sept 16–Oct 4)
• Winter 3-week break (Dec 19–Jan 8)
• Spring 3-week break (Mar 12–Apr 1
• Summer 5-week break (June 4–July 15)

Royal Palm Charter School will offer low cost academic and activities camps during the breaks that will give students additional instructional time outside of the standard 180 days.

“I am personally thrilled about the new schedule,” said Kyley Haynes, mother of a Royal Palm Charter School student.

“Having a child with learning struggles, I think year-round school will help him to not be so overwhelmed and retain more of what he learns. Overall, I think this is beneficial to everyone.”
