Featuring Academics, STEAM, and Fun Team and Watersport Activities
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The cooler days remind us that winter is still lurking about, but Florida residents don’t fret much about the nippy weather, for we know summer will all too soon pick up steam.
Florida Preparatory Academy is getting the jump on summer with registration for an outstanding summer of STEAM –Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. Available slots are expected to fill up fast, given the caliber and affordability of the program.
The day rate for the program is only $500 for four weeks, all-inclusive. High school and middle school students each have their own program track.
“Given the incredibly budget-friendly price, we anticipate demand to be high for each of our programs and would suggest registering asap,” said Jeanette Middleton, communications director at Florida Prep.
High school students may have a problem choosing between the STEAM and Activity Workshops. With the STEAM program, students will immerse themselves in robotics, forensic science, engineering, cybersecurity, underwater archeology, marine biology, space science and physics, blockchain technology, art and more.
“All our programs offer an intriguing mix of opportunities,” said Middleton.
“The STEAM workshop allows students to involved themselves in challenging activities and to discover more about emerging technologies with other like-minded students.”
The workshop features world-class speakers, classroom instruction, field trips and experimental activities that ensure each day is filled with challenging and exciting opportunities for learning.
With the Activity Workshop, high school students with the urge to be on-the-go will have plenty of time to explore the myriad of outdoor – and indoor –activities available along the Space Coast.
Surfing, paddleboarding, fishing, pickleball, pool, ping-pong, pick-up games of basketball, board games, movies should keep teens busy and engaged.
For middle schoolers, Florida Prep offers the Academic Workshop, with classroom programs in math, science, English and history. The workshop includes fun weekly field trips designed to enhance the study experience.
Middle school students can also opt for their own Activity Workshop similar to those offered in the high school version, but with adaptations for the younger age of the participants.
On some occasions, both high school and middle school students may travel to an activity together, but the younger students will always have a dedicated chaperone.
The workshops, which begin July 8 and end Aug. 2, run daily from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., although on some occasions, hours may change to accommodate field trip schedules. Drop-off is available at 8 a.m. each day.
As summer programs go, the value is hard to surpass. Included in the $500 fee are lunch, two Florida Prep t-shirts, field trips and transportation to and from activities.
Boarding Option Available
For students interested in checking out the college lifestyle, Florida Prep has added a boarding option that includes the choice of one of the above workshops with the added experience of dorm living.
The boarding program, which operates concurrently with the workshops, is expected to attract students from around the world, which gives local students the opportunity to experience cultural diversity and make friends on a global scale.
For working parents, the boarding program also provides a stress-free summer with the knowledge that their children are fully involved in completely supervised activities that will enhance their lives.
“Having children at home when at work full-time can sometimes be a worry for parents,” said Middleton. “The boarding option allows for that worry to go away.”
Parents can feel secure that their child is being supervised 24/7 as their student enjoys the adventure of being away from home, making friends with their peers from other countries without having to leave their hometown.
The boarding option includes all meals, all field trip, weekend tickets to Orlando theme parks, ground transportation to and from activities, three Florida Prep t-shirts and bed linens.
The experience can be extended with Florida Prep’s Florida Adventure Road Trip, scheduled from Aug. 3 to 10. From alligators to amusement parks, from shopping to museums, the all-inclusive trip packs a full week of adventures in the Sunshine State for an additional $1,500.
Preparing Leaders of Tomorrow
Since its launch in 1961, Florida Preparatory Academy, formerly Florida Air Academy, has earned a reputation as a school that prepares the leaders of tomorrow.
The co-educational institution attracts young men and women from around the United States and from 22 countries. Although international in scope, the school takes pride in a “hometown” atmosphere that nurtures global citizens who will be comfortable with and accepting of other cultures.
Students are encouraged to be independent, responsible individuals, but staff and faculty are there for them 24/7 to guide them and provide support.
“They develop planning skills and learn to budget their time and set priorities for homework,” said principal Lisa Gray.
“They’re learning skills now that they would otherwise have had to wait until college to develop.”
Situated on 11 landscaped acres that boast one of the largest concentrations of historic 1920’s-era buildings in East Central Florida, Florida Prep offers a cozy home-away-from-home for students, whether they are there for the day or choose to board.
Impeccable Reputation for Excellence
In 2017, California-based Newopen USA purchased Florida Prep and has significantly invested in expanding the school’s physical footprint and its technology.
Newopen USA selected Florida Prep because of its impeccable reputation for excellence and for its strategic location in one of the fastest growing technology hubs in the country.
Newopen is dedicated to building a world-class STEAM program and has invested significant resources to this end.
Small classes encourage an interaction between students and teachers to maximize the educational experience. Florida Prep also offers honors classes, advanced placement and dual enrollment opportunities at nearby Florida Institute of Technology and at Eastern Florida State College.
Students are guided to become responsible, productive individuals eager to challenge themselves academically.
“We have a rich history of academic achievement, but it is not all about academics,” said Middleton. “We nurture the entire individual.”
