Panthers star, Melanie Murphy, keeps on racking in honors as she has been named Louisville Slugger / National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) pitcher of the week for its final installment of the year.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Panthers star, Melanie Murphy, keeps on racking in honors as she has been named Louisville Slugger / National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) pitcher of the week for its final installment of the year.

This is the senior’s second national award of the week.

The Melbourne, Florida native first national award was the FastPitch News (FPN) pitcher of the week which was announced Tuesday, April, 30.

Murphy was also touted as the Sunshine State Conference pitcher of the week Monday, April 29, for her dominance against conference foe, Eckerd. This was her second SSC pitcher of the week this season and third of her career.

The No. 5 Panthers’ ace was dominant against the Tritons as she went 3-0 in the pitching circle. These wins helped the Panthers clinch the 2019 Sunshine State Conference title, the first in program history.

In her three appearances (two starts), Murphy saw 14.2 innings of work and allowed no runs on five hits with 12 strikes outs. She also registered two complete games, two solo shutouts and was part of a combined effort for a third.

Melanie was magnificent in her two starts as she allowed no runs in either and never gave up more than three hits (three in the first start and two in the second). She also sent six back to the pine on strikes in both contests. She ended her weekend with a final at-bat strikeout that clinched the SSC title.

Murphy also came out during the seventh inning of game two. She shut down Eckerd’s final push and kept the game 0-0 as it went into the bottom half of the seventh in which the team won in walk-off fashion.

Melanie and the rest of the softball team will be waiting till Monday, May 6, to find out their first opponent in the NCAA South Region Playoff. The first game of the regional championship will take place Thursday, May 9.
