Also named Sunshine State Conference pitcher of the week
BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Melanie Murphy adds another trophy to her mantle as she has been named FastPitch News (FPN) national pitcher of the week, announced Tuesday morning.
This is Murphy’s third honor of the season and first from FPN.
Murphy was also bestowed the Sunshine State Conference pitcher of the week Monday, April 29, for her excellence in the circle.
The senior ace was dominant over the weekend as she collected all three wins against Eckerd. These victories helped the Panthers clinch the 2019 Sunshine State Conference title, the first in program history.
In her three appearances (two starts), Murphy went 14.2 innings and allowed no runs on five hits with 12 strikes outs. She also tallied two complete games, two solo shutouts and combined with teammate Jordan Lawlis for a third.
Melanie shined in her two starts as she allowed no runs in either and never gave up more than three hits (three in the first start and two in the second). She also sat six down on strikes in both contests. She ended her weekend with a final at-bat strikeout which clinched the SSC title.
Murphy also came in relief during in the second game to help the Panthers navigate through a tough situation in the top of the seventh inning.
Melanie and the rest of the No. 5 Panthers will be hitting the practice field for the next couple of weeks as they wait for the start of the NCAA South Region Playoff. The first game of the regional contests will take place Thursday, May 9.
