Melbourne Police Arrest Car-Jacking Suspect After High Speed Chase Results in Vehicle Crash

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Melbourne police have arrested a suspected car-jacker after a high-speed chase resulted in a crash in the early morning hours of Tuesday at the intersection of Babcock Street and South Carolina Avenue in Fellsmere.

Arrested was Quaheim Stephens-Jones, 25, was charged with Fleeing and Eluding and Driving while License suspended with knowledge.

Jones’ license had been suspended since Aril of 2017.

The incident began Tuesday about 1 a.m. as a Melbourne police officer was patrolling the area of Babcock Street and Florida Avenue when a radio call alerted the officer of a blue Nissan Sentra bearing South Carolina tags was traveling south on Babcock Street at a high rate of speed.

According to a police report, the officer was familiar with the vehicle as it had fled from a previous traffic stop hours earlier.

“The vehicle was reported stolen and I had learned the suspect was also wanted for a carjacking warrant,” said the MPD officer in a report.

The MPD officer provided this account in the arrest report:

I observed the vehicle traveling south at a high rate of speed with no lights activated. I maneuvered behind the vehicle and activated my emergency lights and sirens signaling the driver of my lawful order to stop.

The vehicle traveled south at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour running several red lights while we continued to pursue the vehicle.

I continued to pursue the vehicle until it crashed at the intersection of Babcock Street and South Carolina Avenue in Fellsmere. A felony stop was conducted and all three occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody.
