Wimbush expected QB starter for UCF
ORLANDO, FLORIDA (UCF Knights) – UCF QB Darriel Mack Jr. is out indefinitely after breaking his ankle this week in a non-football related activity, according to a team spokesperson.
Mack was competing with Notre Dame-transfer QB Brandon Wimbush for the UCF starting quarterback job this season.
“There is no specific timetable for his return. He will not be available for training camp,” UCF coach Josh Heupel said in a statement.
“We hope Darriel has a speedy recovery, but we are excited about the talent we have in the quarterback room to start the season.”
The loss could be significant as QB McKenzie Milton still recovers from last year’s horrific knee injury that jeopardized his playing career.
Mack served as Milton’s backup last season and started against Memphis in the AAC Championship game and the Fiesta Bowl versus LSU.
With Milton and Mack out this year, the Knights have only three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster heading into fall camp in Brandon Wimbush, redshirt freshman Quadry Jones and true freshman Dillon Gabriel who is also competing for the starting job.
UCF opens the season at home against Florida A&M on Thursday, August 29. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on ESPN.
