Hurricane Shelters Now Open in Brevard, Evacuation Order Went into Effective at 8 a.m. Today

Shelters include several Space Coast area schools

Manatee Elementary in Viera is now open as a Hurricane Dorian shelter as of 5 p.m. Sunday. Shelters include several Space Coast area schools and Brevard Public Schools officials said their teams were ready to serve the people of Brevard County and help residents “weather what’s to come.” “We have a great team working to welcome in the community and provide them shelter during the storm,” sais Brevard Public Schools officials.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard County has opened 13 shelters as of 5 p.m. Sunday for residents needing safe harbor from potentially dangerous wind and water conditions anticipated from Hurricane Dorian, which is expected to begin impacting the county some time late Monday night into early Tuesday morning.

Shelters include several Space Coast area schools and Brevard Public Schools officials said their teams were ready to serve the people of Brevard County and help residents “weather what’s to come.”

“A big thank you to our shelter teams, cafeteria staff, facilities workers and all those working to keep our Brevard families safe and comfortable these next few days,” said BPS officials on social media.

The following shelters are now open on the Space Coast:

Pet-Friendly:

  • Port St. John Community Center, 6650 Corto Road, Port St. John
  • Viera Regional Community Center, 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera
  • Wickham Park Community Center, 2815 Leisure Way, Melbourne
  • Ted Whitlock Community Center at Fred Poppe Regional Park, 1951 Malabar Rd NW, Palm Bay.

General Population:

  • Apollo Elementary School, 3085 Knox McRae Dr., Titusville
  • Walter Butler Community Center at Bernice Jackson Park, 4201 US Highway 1, Cocoa
  • Manatee Elementary School, 3425 Viera Blvd., Viera
  • Sherwood Elementary School, 2541 Post Road, Melbourne
  • Bayside High School, 1901 DeGroodt Rd. S.W. Palm Bay
  • South Mainland Community Center, 3700 Allen Ave., Micco.

Space Coast Area Transit will provide transportation to three special needs shelters for registered clients.

Although shelters will provide food, residents going to shelters will need to take their own supplies, including bedding, folding chairs or sleeping bags; any needed medications; multiple changes of clothing and sturdy shoes; personal hygiene items; and entertainment items, like games, cards, books, or magazines.

Residents who do not plan to stay in public shelters are encouraged to stay with family or friends on the mainland, and to evacuate tens of miles rather than hundreds of miles, as traffic on highways and interstates is likely to be heavier.

A mandatory evacuation order is in place effective at 8 a.m. Monday morning for residents on the barrier island, low-lying and flood-prone areas, and those living in manufactured or mobile homes.

Mandatory evacuations begin at 8 a.m. to allow residents to take shelter by nightfall.
