BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – When Nichole’s son was in basic training for the Army, there was one thing that helped him feel connected to home.
“Letters of encouragement – those were some of the only things that got him through basic training because there’s no other communication,” said Nichole, a nurse manager in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Health First’s Holmes Regional Medical Center.
“Knowing he’s got the support of not just his family, but a whole group of people is fantastic. It really means a lot to them.”
Earlier this month, Nichole was one of the many associates throughout Health First’s Integrated Delivery Network who penned heartfelt notes to soldiers stationed overseas during the holidays.
Boxes were set up at various locations across Health First, offering associates an opportunity to jot down words of encouragement and gratitude for service members, which will then be sent abroad.
It’s something Brevard’s community healthcare system has done since 2016 as a simple token of appreciation to those who serve.
Nichole’s 19-year-old son – as well as her two nephews – fits that bill. He will be away from home for the first time this holiday season.
“It’s heartbreaking and exciting for me at the same time,” Nichole said.
“Joining the Army is something he’s always wanted to do his whole life. As a mom, it’s hard not having him here. It never gets easier.”
Being able to write a note to soldiers just like her son is a source of comfort to her.
“It’s very touching and dear to the heart,” Nichole said.
“It’s a way to get to communicate with my son and everyone that’s out serving our country with him. To know that they have our support, especially during the holidays. It’s hard not to be around their families and close friends during that time.”
