BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Mayor Kathy Meehan read a proclamation during last night’s City Council meeting recognizing April 1, 2020, as Census Day and encouraging all residents of the City of Melbourne to participate in the 2020 Census.

“Every resident of our community counts and deserves to be counted,” said Meehan.

“An accurate census count is vital to our community and residents’ wellbeing by helping planners determine where to locate schools, daycare centers, roads, public transportation, hospitals and other facilities.”

The City of Melbourne has received millions of dollars in federal and state funding for aids and grants, police and fire, economic development, housing and community development, transportation improvements, and hurricane assistance, based in part on census data.

As mandated by the U.S. Constitution, the census is a once-every-decade count of everyone living in the country. Census data determines how many seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives and is used in the redistricting of state legislatures, county boards of supervisors and city councils.

Residents will begin receiving invitations to participate in the 2020 Census in mid-March.

This year they will be able to complete the census online, via phone or by mail.
