BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – City officials are warning residents of a 400-acre prescribed burn that is being held today at NASA SW of SR-3 and Haulover Canal.

The burn could cause some visibility issues in the area.

Prescribed burning is an essential, cost-effective tool for restoring and maintaining the natural plant and animal communities in Florida’s Wildlife Management Area (WMA) system.

FWC biologists and land managers work closely with the Florida Forest Service to obtain a burn permit before beginning any controlled burns on Florida’s WMAs.

The prescribed fires are conducted by highly trained and professional staffers when weather conditions are suitable.

The Florida Park Service uses mobile teams to apply fire across the state.
