SHERIFF IVEY: 'Coming together by staying apart'

SPACE COAST DAILY TV COVID-19 UPDATE: Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey held a press conference on Monday outside  Special Programs Facility in Sharpes to provide a COVID-19 response update and announce his first-ever “First Responders Drive-Thru Parade,” set for four consecutive evenings throughout Brevard this week.

BREVARD COUNTY • SHARPES, FLORIDA – Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey held his first installment of the “First Responders Drive-Thru Parade” at New Life Church in Titusville on Tuesday evening and the festivities drew a huge procession of vehicles full of parents and kids.

“Our parents and children are all closed up in their houses and there are no movies for them to go watch, there’s no place for them to go eat, no parks open for them to go play, so we are trying to be innovative in giving them something to do – something they can do to get the kids out of the house  – but also practice the governor’s directives and CDC’s directives on social distancing,” said Sheriff Ivey.

Sheriff Ivey will host the second of his four First Responders Drive-Thru Parades Wednesday evening at the Merritt Square Mall on Merritt Island at 6 p.m.

“We are going to set up some of the great resources that we have, some of the things people don’t get the opportunity to see,” said Sheriff Ivey.

“It’s going to be a drive-through, so nobody is going to get out of their cars while everyone can see the amazing resources from our partners at fire rescue, from the sheriff’s office and our partners at the local police departments. They are going to get to see everything from massive fire trucks to our bomb unit, and our K9s are going to be on display.”

At the end of the parade, the BCSO bomb robot delivered candy to each car to practice social distancing.

Upcoming First Responders Drive-Thru Parade schedule:

• WEDNESDAY: Merritt Square Mall on Merritt Island, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
•  THURSDAY: Wickham Park in Melbourne, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
• FRIDAY: Eastern Florida State College in Palm Bay, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

“These are challenging times and we need to respond, not react, to this situation,” said Sheriff Ivey.
