REP. RANDY FINE: “Giving our children a chance for peaceful reflection at the beginning of the day will help them strengthen their soul before we help them strengthen their mind.”

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Representative Randy Fine (R-Palm Bay) filed HB 529, which would create a non-denominational moment of silence in schools.

The bill is identical to legislation passed off the House floor in prior legislative sessions; then sponsored by a member of the Democrat Caucus.

“We live in unprecedented times, with our children suffering more mental health challenges than ever before,” said State Representative Randy Fine.

“I believe it is no coincidence that our children are having these struggles at the same time that the average American’s connection to G-d has declined. Whatever your religion, recognizing our place in society and the omnificence of the Almighty helps bring balance and internal peace.”

“Giving our children a chance for peaceful reflection at the beginning of the day will help them strengthen their soul before we help them strengthen their mind.”

“In the midst of such a serious health crisis and overall tension and stress, we must take steps to ensure that we provide our children with the tools to cope,” said Rabbi Schneur Z. Oirechman of Chabad.

“Florida’s sunshine enables our famous produce to grow and flourish, in parallel, we must also provide a distinctive kind of light to enable our children to grow and flourish.

“To that end, we are supporting this bill to require all schools to provide for a moment of silence at the beginning of the school day. Under the guidance of their parents, children will be able to reflect on their position and roles in today’s society, to be more aware of their neighbors and surroundings, and to accept their roles upon entering a most challenging world.

“Leaving each child to their own thoughts makes the moment of silence intensely personal and ultimately even life-changing.”

This bill has also been introduced in the Florida Senate by Senator Dennis Baxley as SB 282.
