Eastern Florida State Men’s Golf Team Shoots 289 to Win District 4 Championship in Alabama

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Eastern Florida State College men’s golf team won their second straight District 4 title and sixth in the past eight seasons Tuesday afternoon in Montgomery, Alabama.
The Titans shot a 289 in the final round to beat Central Alabama by six strokes for the title and will advance to the NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament for the 18th straight season.
The national tournament will be held May 10-13 at The Rawls Course in Lubbock, Texas.
Freshman Matt Gauntlett shot under par for the third straight round at the Arrowhead Country Club, firing a 70 in the final round to post a 204 for the three-round tournament and win the medalist honors.
Teammate John Houchin shot even-par 72 in the final round and tied for third overall with a 211. Houchin and Gauntlett were named to the NJCAA Southeastern District All-Tournament team.
Pontus Torgner placed eighth overall after shooting 1-over 73 in the final round and finished with a 215. Teammate Brandon Boncore shot a 78 and finished in 22nd while Drew Lanier shot a 74 and was tied for 29th.
Head coach Jamie Howell was named the District 4 Coach of the Year and Gauntlett and Lanier made the all-district team.
“Awesome job by the guys and a well-played win by Matt and tie for third by John,” Howell said.
“The guys played consistently all day and in the heat of the moment, we’re right where they needed to be. Good event for Pontus and Brandon and Drew’s first score today really set the tone. Ryan McMillan did an excellent job of being there for each member of the team, I am proud of all of them.”
