Motorist Dies After Suffering Medical Episode in Melbourne, Strikes Pedestrian Before Crashing Into Utility Pole

An 85-year-old woman from Indian Harbour Beach died Monday afternoon after she suffered a medical episode while driving on Municipal Lane and crashing into a utility pole near Strawbridge Avenue in Melbourne.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – An 85-year-old woman from Indian Harbour Beach died Monday afternoon after she suffered a medical episode while driving on Municipal Lane and crashing into a utility pole near Strawbridge Avenue in Melbourne.

The motorist has been identified Joan Lee Gillenwater.

Police responded to the scene around 2:48 p.m. in the area of Strawbridge Avenue and Municipal Lane regarding a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash.

When police arrived on scene, they discovered the driver of a white four-door sedan suffered a medical episode while traveling southbound on Municipal Lane.

The driver subsequently left the roadway and drove onto the sidewalk striking a pedestrian and then a wooden utility pole.

The driver of the vehicle had sustained life threatening injuries as a result of the crash and later died at Holmes Regional Medical Center.

Police say it appears that alcohol and drugs were not a factor in this crash.

The pedestrian injured has been identified as 40-year-old Benjamin Thomas Dixon from Titusville

This crash is still under investigation.
