BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – Former Cocoa High School running back Javian Hawkins agreed to a contract with the Tennessee Titans after being waived by the Atlanta Falcons.
Javian Hawkins, who signed an undrafted free-agent contract with the Falcons, has been making a name for himself throughout the NFL preseason.
In week 2 of the preseason against the Miami Dolphins Hawkins rushed for 46 yards with five carries, totaling an average of 9.2 yards per carry.
The 5-foot-9 running back displayed his blazing speed with a 30-yard rush. The Falcons needed to trim their roster from 85 players to 80 and waived Hawkins.
The next day, Hawkins packed his bags and landed in Tennessee. Hawkins joins New Smyrna Beach alumnus Darrynton Evans in the Titans’ backfield. Hawkins also reunites with former Louisville Cardinals teammate and wide receiver Dez Fitzpatrick.
“Too many, and this isn’t like a knock on Javian,” Falcons coach Arthur Smith said of the backfield situation in a press conference on Wednesday. “It’s just the way the rules are, and when we had to make moves after every (exhibition) game a couple years ago. It was different (when) you carried 90 all the way through the fourth (exhibition game), so you’ve got to make moves.”
“Everybody we talked to, it’s not the end of the road for him,” Smith said. “Whether it’s here or somewhere else.”
Arthur Smith was the Offensive Coordinator of the Tennessee Titans for the past two seasons, so it is likely Smith was in communications with the staff at Tennesse and played a factor in him joining the roster.
Hawkins rushed for 2,355 yards along with 16 touchdowns in his three seasons for the Louisville Cardinals.
Javian Hawkins earned his stripes playing for the Cocoa Tigers by rushing for 2,571 yards with 29 touchdowns in two seasons. Hawkins helped lead the Tigers to a State Championship in 2016. Coming out of high school Hawkins was a three-star running back.
