BREVARD COUNTY • WEST MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – A Brevard County Sheriff’s Deputy was shot in the leg, and one person was killed, during a traffic stop on Monday afternoon in West Melbourne.
According to Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Michael DeMorat, the incident stemmed from a traffic stop at about 1 p.m.
“The shooting happened along U.S. 192, just west of I-95, in the West Melbourne area,” said Chief Deputy DeMorat during a press conference that was streamed live on Space Coast Daily TV.
Chief Deputy DeMorat said two deputies were conducting the traffic stop when an occupant of the vehicle opened fire on the deputies.
The deputies then returned fire, fatally injuring the shooter.
“Our deputies returned fire, defending their lives and the shooter is deceased,” said Chief Deputy DeMorat.
“By the grace of God and their training — they did what they were trained to do — and we don’t have two funerals this week of two Central Florida law enforcement officers.”
Chief Deputy DeMorat declined at this time to identify the deputies involved in the incident or the deceased shooter.
Chief Deputy DeMorat said Sheriff Wayne Ivey will provide additional information later today.
