Why is Mobility Important in Golf?

Golf is a fantastic way to do a little exercise while getting some fresh air. You can take a step back from technology and enjoy an afternoon on the course. Contrary to popular opinion, golf is actually a great workout. You can improve your strength, flexibility, and range of motion. 

You need to make sure you are looking after your body and achieving the correct form. Golf can lead to some nasty injuries if you’re not careful. Wear the correct golfing clothing and footwear to diminish your risk of injury.

Golf is a sport of repetitive movements. The stresses and strains of playing golf can start to wear you down over time. Repetitive movements, like swinging to hit the ball, can put a large amount of stress on a few muscles and joints. You need to make sure your body is equipped to handle this stress and movement. By improving your mobility, you can move more efficiently and reduce the risk of injury.

You can generate far more clubhead speed with better mobility. You can create a longer backswing when there is more separation between your hips and shoulders. You need to utilise your mobility and look into improving it where possible.

It gives you options for swing mechanics

Your physical abilities can drastically impact your golf ability. Poor mobility can limit your golf swing and make it difficult to achieve clubhead speed. You will be restricted by the type and degree of movement your body can perform. 

Here are a few stretches you can try to improve your mobility and golf game in the long run. 

Kneeling hip flexor stretch

Place your left knee on the ground and your right leg in the lunge position. Reach your arms above your head and hold for 45 seconds. Try not to lunge too far forward – your knee should not come past your toes. 

With your right arm in the air, bend to the side and reach up and over with your left. You should feel a stretch through your left hip flexor. Remember to be gentle with your body when stretching and avoid overexerting yourself. 

Kneeling hamstring stretch

Resume the same position as before and keep your hips facing forward. Stretch your toes upwards on the bent leg and keep your chest up and back straight. Shift your hips back and feel the stretch in your hamstring. 

There are plenty of ways to improve your mobility on the golf course. A few simple stretches can help you identify where your body feels tight and limited. Work on these areas, and consult a professional if you experience any pain.
