Port Canaveral Commission to Undergo Makeover, VanVolkenburgh Declares Candidacy for District 3 Seat

The Port Canaveral commission will undergo a makeover as three of the five seats will be contested during the 2022 elections. Fritz VanVolkenburgh, left, is a candidate for CPA District 3, while current District 3 Commissioner and CPA Board Chair Wayne Justice has announced he will run for the Port Authority District 5 slot, which is now occupied by Robyn Hattaway, who has filed to run for the Florida House District 50 seat now held by Rene Plasencia.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA –The Port Canaveral commission will undergo a makeover as three of the five seats will be contested during the 2022 elections.

Fritz VanVolkenburgh, currently chief of staff for Brevard County Commission District 2, has filed to run for the District 3 Canaveral Port Authority Commission seat.

Current District 3 Commissioner and CPA Board Chair Wayne Justice has announced he will run for the Port Authority District 5 slot, which is now occupied by Robyn Hattaway who has filed to run for the Florida House District 50 seat now held by Rene Plasencia.

Plasencia is running for the Florida Senate next year.

Other candidates vying for the Florida House District 50 seat currently include Republicans Richard Furman, Angel Perry, Christopher Robert Wright, and Yukong Zhao; and Democrat Tom Keen.

Justice, who was first elected as a Port Commissioner representing District 3 in 2014, is serving his second stint as the CPA Chair, having served as chairman in 2018. He retired as a two-star Admiral after a 37-year career in the U.S. Coast Guard and is a maritime consultant.

The Canaveral Port Authority Commission District 1 seat will also be up for grabs as current Vice-Chair Jerry Allender will seek reelection in 2022. He was first elected inAugust 2010.

CPA District 3 candidate VanVolkenburgh has worked with leadership at the federal, state, county and municipal levels to tackle policy and operational matters, and has handled hundreds of constituent issues within the county. He advises the Commissioner on agenda items across multiple boards and committees and helps provide oversight of Brevard County’s $1.65 billion budget.

VanVolkenburgh spent an early part of his career as a ferryboat captain, freightboat captain and harbormaster. He has held a 100-ton Coast Guard Merchant Marine license since 1983.

He has also worked as a finance manager for Brevard County, internal auditor for the Brevard County Clerk of Court, assistant state attorney in the 18th Judicial Circuit in Brevard County, management consultant with Deloitte Consulting, and bank operations officer at Barnett Bank. He also served as a Firefighter/EMT reservist with Brevard County from 2013-2019.

VanVolkenburgh earned a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, as well as an MBA (MSIA) from Carnegie Mellon University and has been a member of the Florida Bar since 2006.

The 2022 Primary Election will be held on August 23 and the General Election will be held on November 8.
