BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA — The Merritt Island Mustangs continued their undefeated start to the season with a dominant 45-0 victory over the Astronaut War Eagles.
The Mustangs showed no signs of a hangover following their 45-37 victory over Ponte Vedra, delivering an efficient offensive performance against Astronaut.
Merritt Island scored five touchdowns and kicked one field goal on its first six offensive possessions, taking control of the game early and never looking back.
Senior quarterback Kevin Verpaele led the Mustangs’ explosive passing attack, completing 16-of-21 passes for 356 yards and four touchdowns.
Senior tight end DeShaun Thomas was one of Verpaele’s top targets, hauling in four receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown.
The victory moves Merritt Island to 4-0 on the season as the Mustangs continue to establish themselves as one of Brevard County’s top teams.
Merritt Island will face another difficult non-district test on Sept. 18, when the Mustangs host Bishop Kenny.
Astronaut falls to 1-2 and will look to rebound on Sept. 18 when the War Eagles travel to face Eustis.
