BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Keep Brevard Beautiful “Pick it Up, Pack it Out” program is a new community education and awareness effort to address and stem the ongoing litter issues along our causeways.

Partners in this program include the Canaveral Port Authority, Brevard County Commission District 2, Florida Department of Transportation District 5 Brevard Operations Center and their roadway contractors, Space Coast Office of Tourism and Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.

Recent issues and complaints about litter along State Road 528 and other causeways brought the group together to brainstorm how we could prevent litter along the shorelines.

“With the Indian River Lagoon and our beaches being the biggest draw for tourists and residents alike, we knew something had to change,” said Keep Brevard Beautiful officials.

The “Pick it Up, Pack it Out” campaign is multi-faceted addressing education, signage, awareness, enforcement and community-based cleanups. A few of the successes so far include:

■ Continuing to maintain the three waste dumpsters Port Canaveral has had along the Banana River portion of SR 528 for several years.
■ Brevard County District 2 Commissioner Lober obtained an extra dumpster along the southern shoreline and allocated funds for a trailer for litter removal and cleanup supplies.
■ FDOT has added 36 anti-litter signs along SR 528 in areas of high traffic.
■ Keep Brevard Beautiful has been approved for an additional grant through the Space Coast Office of Tourism to offer more cleanups on busier weekends.

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office is increasing visibility in the area to address overnight camping and homeless camps. Together, all the agencies have joined their forces in this new anti-litter campaign.

All agencies have agreed to post the new messaging on their websites and social media to help spread the word and we need your help to spread the news.

“The hope is that by bringing awareness, we may be able to create a behavior change about littering along our beautiful Brevard County roadways and causeways.” said Keep Brevard Beautiful officials.
