BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – ‘Spade’, a sub-adult loggerhead sea turtle, was found stranded on February 8 at Canaveral National Seashore. Spade presented extremely emaciated, dehydrated, and covered in encrusting barnacles.

This turtle’s carapace is also oddly shaped. Spade is missing most of it’s marginal scutes, which gives them their rounded heart shape, leaving Spade in more of the shape of a, well, spade. Brevard Zoo is unsure if this is congenital or from an injury.

It took a little while, but Spade started to eat and Brevard Zoo is hoping we can get some weight on this sea turtle.

Spade has been picky about what they are eating, but Brevard Zoo knows they will always eat a nice big squid for them!
