BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – Palm Bay’s new Police Chief Mariano Augello took the oath of office, administered by City Attorney Patricia Smith during Thursday’s City Council meeting.

During his heartfelt speech, he went on to say, “It has been my honor to serve with the Palm Bay Police Department all these years, and I consider it a great privilege to be your Chief.”

Former Chief Nelson Moya announced his retirement from the department after 31 years of dedicated service in February. Augello served as Acting Chief upon Moya’s departure.

After serving in the U.S. Army, Chief Augello joined the Palm Bay Police Department in 2000. During his career, he has served in many capacities including Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Corporal and Neighborhood Policing Unit Coordinator.

In 2006, he was promoted to Sergeant supervising in Patrol, Neighborhood Policing Unit, Crime Suppression Unit and Internal Affairs. In 2011, he was promoted to Lieutenant and served in Patrol as a Watch Commander, Special Operations and Criminal Investigations.

He was promoted to Commander in 2017 and was assigned to the Special Operations Division and Uniform Services Division. In 2019, he was appointed as the Deputy Chief of Police. Chief Augello also served several years on the SWAT Team and ended that assignment as the team’s commander.

Chief Augello has graduated from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Leadership Academy, Senior Manager Institute of Police, Florida State University’s Center for Public Management, and has a Bachelor of Science degree from Barry University in administration.

In 2016, he was the recipient of the City of Palm Bay City Manager’s Award of Excellence.

“As Deputy Chief, Mario has exemplified the integrity, leadership skills, and collaborative management style that is critical to the continued success and growth of the Palm Bay Police Department,” said City Manager Sherman.

“Having served the City for over 21 years, he knows our agency well and has been a strong advocate for and supporter of the Department’s ‘Connect – Serve – Impact’ vision. I am excited to see him step into this role, and I am confident that he will continue to lead the department well into the future.”
