FDLE Announces Melbourne Police Officer Will Not Be Criminally Charged After Knife Wielding Suspect Shot Dead on Florida Tech Campus

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has concluded the criminal investigation regarding this incident, which was then turned over to the Brevard County State Attorney’s Office for review.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has concluded the criminal investigation regarding this incident, which was then turned over to the Brevard County State Attorney’s Office for review.

Today, the Melbourne Police Department was notified that criminal charges would not be filed against either the Melbourne Police Officer or the F.I.T. Security Officer involved.

The MPD police officer involved in this shooting has been a police officer with the department for over five and a half years and was assigned to the Patrol Division at the time of this incident.

The officer was placed on administrative duty awaiting the outcome of the State Attorney’s investigation.

At this time, the Melbourne Police Department will begin an Administrative Review of the incident as it remains under an administrative investigation.

Melbourne Police outlined details on the officer-involved shooting December 3 on the Florida Tech campus that resulted in the death of a knife-wielding suspect.

The suspect was identified as Florida Tech student 18-year-old Alhaji M. Sow from Riverdale, Georgia.

The initial 911 call provided information that the suspect was assaulting students.

Police say the investigation has shown Sow was acting erratic and was on the college campus attacking multiple students.

The Melbourne Police Department is releasing the 911 calls received during this incident.

The incident was captured on the Melbourne Police Officer’s body worn camera (BWC); however, due to the ongoing investigation being conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement it will be released at a later time.

The identities of the Melbourne Police Officer and the F.I.T. Security Officer involved in this incident are not being released at this time.
