Inter Milan vs AC Milan
By Space Coast Daily // January 24, 2023
The top tier league in Italy, Serie A, is among the top 5 European Leagues in the world.
It is known for some of the most exciting derbies in the world. The Milan derby, also known as Derby di Milano or Derby della Madonnina, is the epic clash between Internazionale (Inter Milan) and Associazione Calcio Milan (AC Milan).
The first football game dates back to 10 January 1909, when Milan was victorious in a 5-goal thriller match ending 3-2.
AC Milan was founded on 16 December 1899 and is one of the best clubs in the world. They hold the record for the most UEFA Champions League titles won by an Italian club, winning seven.
The team is currently the second most successful club in the Italian league alongside their city rival Inter winning 19 league titles each behind Juventus’s 36 Serie A titles.
Football Club Internazionale Milano, named Nerazzuurri, was founded on the 9th of March 1908. Inter spent little time putting names in the history book, winning its first championship just two years after its creation.
They have since then been on a trophy-winning spree accumulating 19 league titles, 3 UEFA Champions League, 6 Supercoppa Italiana and 8 Coppa Italia, and a few others.
Despite being city rivals, Inter and A.C. Millan share the same stadium called Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, popularly known as San Siro, the largest stadium in Italy, with its capacity of about 75,000.
There has been a total of 304 matches between the Italian giants, 233 official and 71 unofficial. Milan has gotten the better of their city rival, having the highest total number of wins (115), but Inter Milan has the most winners for the official games with 85 compared to Milan’s 79 wins.
On 11 May 2001, the Rossoneri fans left San Siro with the biggest smile as they saw their team beat Inter 6-0, the most significant victory recorded in a Milan derby game.
A.C. Milan and Inter have produced and had several great players, the likes of Kaka, Ronaldinho, Filippo Inzaghi, Leonardo Bonucci, Franco Baresi, Andriy Shevchenko, Paolo Maldini, Clarence Seedorf, Marco Van Basten, Javier Zanetti, Andrea Pirlo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Samuel Eto’o, David Beckham Ronaldo and a lot more.
Being city rivals didn’t stop some players from playing for both teams. Paolo Maldini holds the record for the most matches in the Milan derby with 56 games, while Andriy Shevchenko holds the record for the highest number of goals scored by a single player with 14.
A.C. Milan and Inter had a massive dip in form and degeneration in the quality of players. The drop in form started after the 2010/11 season, which saw A.C. Milan crowned champions and Inter runner-up.
Milan could only end as runner-up the season after and, ever since, couldn’t challenge for the title alongside Inter, and this led to a dominating period by Juventus.
The revitalization of the Milan teams started with Inter in the 2019/20 season as they finished the season second with a point being Juventus, who won the league title for the 9th time in a row.
The season after would see Inter win the league title for the first time in 11 years as Milan ended the season 2nd with points behind the champions.
In the 2021/22 season, AC Milan and Inter Milan locked horns in the title race, but it would be Milan’s turn to taste the glory as they won the Serie A with just 2 points over Inter.
Their 2-1 victory over Inter in February proved decisive in the league, taking 4 points out of a possible six over the two legs encounter. Milan’s last league title saw them win their first in 11 years, an equal number of wins with Inter (19).
The last Milan derby game played shared the same score as the first-ever match between the two Italian giants. Goals from Olivier Giroud and Rafael Leao gave Milan the edge over Inter in a 3-1 encounter.
Inter will look forward to taking revenge when the city rivals meet in the Italian Super Cup final on 18 January 2023. A.C. Milan will be looking forward to defending their title as the pair meet again on 5 February for their second meeting in the Serie A this season.
