The Dos and Don’ts of Effective Backlink Campaigns

By  //  February 3, 2023

If you step into the world of SEO, you’ll soon learn some concepts that form its bedrock.

These are called best practices. They refer to some general ideas you’ll need to know about if you’re going to succeed at getting a website to rank.

Backlinks are one of the foundations of modern SEO, and they’re probably going to continue to be for some time to come. The best link-building agencies you might hire can launch a backlink campaign for your website that should help you get more visits and conversions.

We’ll talk about some of the dos and don’ts of backlink campaigns now.

Link to Sites with Excellent Reputations

If you hire a company to set up a backlink campaign for you, or you tackle the job yourself, you’ll soon learn that the only sites you should link to are ones with great reputations. You can look at a website before you link to it and quickly get an idea about its quality.

If the site has outstanding domain authority, that lets you know whether you should link to it. There are free domain authority checkers online that you can use. They assign each website a domain authority from 0 to 100.

The higher a site’s authority, the better. Usually, you won’t want to set up a backlink to a site with an authority rating of less than 70.

Use Anchor Texts that Make Sense

You can create anchor texts using keywords. Doing keyword research is often a part of an effective backlink campaign.

When you’ve come up with some likely keyword phrases, you can use them on your site as anchor texts. You should only send your visitors to sites having to do with those keywords, though.

If you send your website visitors to sites that have nothing to do with the keywords you used as an anchor text, Google will penalize you.

Don’t Link to Spammy Sites

You can check a site’s credibility with a domain authority checker before you link to it. However, you can also look at a website and see whether it exists just as a staging ground for link-building.

Some websites are just a hodgepodge of random links. You won’t be able to tell why the site exists other than as a collection of seemingly irrelevant links.

These sites exist only as a black hat SEO tactic. It’s not one you see much anymore since the Google algorithm has gotten wise to it. Still, check every website before you link to it. Usually, if a site is too spammy, you can instantly see that when you start exploring it.

Review Your Backlinks Regularly

As you set up your backlinks, you might feel sure you’re only linking to sites with solid reputations and that all of your backlinks work. Remember that conditions online always change, though.

Check your backlinks regularly to ensure they’re still working and going to appropriate sites. The internet is never static. It’s like a living organism that you must continually monitor.
