The history

Before we get into the recent changes in Slots, it’s important we revisit where they came from and how they were first made. This way, you can really see the progression over the years and how dramatically the classic Slots we know and love were first formed.

Charles Augustus Fey is known as the inventor of the first slot machine. In 1891, he created a machine that would allow automatic payouts. This featured three reels and five symbols; hearts, diamonds, spades, horseshoes and a Liberty Bell.

The highest payout was awarded for three bell symbols, which is why the machine was named the Liberty Bell. The Liberty Bell gained huge popularity, and without a patent, it wasn’t long before others copied his design.

The progression of the reels

For many years, slot machines remained mechanical, where pulling down a lever would set the reels in motion. This manual approach allowed players to feel as though they had more control over the game and the outcome, despite this not being the case.

In 1964, the first fully electromechanical slot called Money Honey was released by Bally. The reels were operated entirely electrically, yet the game was still started by pulling the lever. For players at the time, it would have been too unfamiliar to play the game without pulling the lever. The game was hugely popular and led to the increasing dominance of electromechanical Slots. Soon after, the familiar lever was removed.

Technology’s first video slot

The first video slot was created in 1976 by a company in Las Vegas. This ignited the fire for the future of online Slots. As expected, over time the classic symbols once displayed on the Liberty Bell were long gone. Now, symbols such as cherries, lemons, Lucky 7s and clovers, are just some of the symbols we can see on the reels today.

The introduction of VR

Virtual Reality was introduced into online casino gaming in the 21st Century and is an option for some specific games. By using a VR headset and a compatible virtual reality gaming platform, you can enjoy an interactive, lifelike casino experience. That means, similar to a live casino online; you can play games and interact with dealers in real time.

Is this something you’d like to do?

With progressions in technology quickly moving, it’s almost impossible to imagine what the future of casino gaming has to offer, especially for the classic Slots.

Will you be putting on the VR headset and stepping into the new world of gaming?
