Florida Power & Light Company is unveiling a new way for electric vehicle drivers to charge their EVs during power outages, public emergencies, or evacuation situations, like before hurricanes.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA– Florida Power & Light Company is unveiling a new way for electric vehicle drivers to charge their EVs during power outages, public emergencies, or evacuation situations, like before hurricanes.

During its annual storm drill event in April, the company showcased a new 39-foot EV fast-charging trailer that can be deployed strategically in the state to help drivers charge up and get back on the road.

“The new mobile EV trailer makes charging available to drivers during a planned evacuation, as they are making their way out of a storm’s path, or after a hurricane,” says Tim Oliver, vice president of FPL Development. “This new technology in FPL’s storm preparedness toolkit will help EV drivers better prepare for emergencies.”

The clean-energy mobile trailer is part of a pilot program aimed at providing electric vehicle owners an additional lifeline to boost their vehicle’s battery and help them get to the next charging location.

The new EV fast-charging trailer can charge as many as six vehicles at any given time, providing up to 4,000 miles of fast charging before needing to replenish its battery.

The program provides FPL an opportunity to continue improving the technology as it adds mobile fast charging to its existing offerings for EV drivers, including home and public charging.

Once the mobile trailer’s battery is depleted, it’s transported back to FPL’s innovative microgrid in Riviera Beach for recharging. The microgrid is part of FPL’s EVolution Hub, a pilot program designed to deliver low-cost energy solutions to customers via innovative solar, battery storage, and EV charging capabilities.

The microgrid is comprised of a five-megawatt solar array and a 7.25-megawatt by 18-megawatt hour battery.

“Florida currently ranks No. 2 in electric vehicle ownership, and with demand continuing to grow, new solutions like the mobile charging trailer will better position EV drivers in our hurricane-prone state,” added Oliver.

The EV mobile fast charging trailer is part of FPL’s commitment to deploying future-proof EV charging technology over the next four years. A second mobile EV trailer is expected to roll out this summer.
