BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – For the first time in several years, Bright Star – Hospice of Health First’s focused social and emotional support program for grieving kids and teens – is hosting its week-long summer camp, this one superhero-themed, and there’s still room for new registrants.

The camp runs in the mornings, from 9 a.m. to noon, beginning Monday, July 10, and ending Thursday, July 13, at the Bright Star Center for Grieving Children and Families, 1131 W. New Haven Ave in West Melbourne (32904).

Depending on the number of campers, programming and curriculum is expected to be tailored to four age groups.

“We are using superheroes as a theme because through that imaginary piece, children can find their superpower, find what it is within them that is going to bring them through some difficult times,” says Nicolle Conley, Bright Star’s Bereavement Coordinator.

Bright Star is a year-round space for children (beginning at 5 years) and teens who have experienced the loss of a loved one. This specialized grief support program meets twice monthly for 90 minutes, empowering young people to thrive after loss through emotional support, learning and creative play. And adults are a part of the healing process.

“We’re a place where kids can come and receive peer support and individual support. It’s my hope that they see us as more than a place, but a warm environment where new healing memories are created. A space for kids to get in touch with the metaphorical or imaginative aspects of childhood in order to process their grief feelings.”

Camp Bright Star is being directed by Nicolle Conley, a Hospice of Health First Bereavement Coordinator.

The summer camp can be a springboard to further participation in regular programs.

All Bright Star programs, including this camp, are offered at no cost to our community because of gifts made to the Health First Foundation. Because of philanthropic support, we are able to ensure grieving children have the activities and supplies that help them process their grief, all led by the dedicated and talented staff and volunteers at the Bright Star Center for Grieving Children and Families.
