Palm Bay Man Arrested for Second-Degree Murder After Fatal Shooting on Race Street in Melbourne

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Melbourne Police Department are conducting a homicide investigation after they responded to 2517 Race Street in reference to a shooting that had occurred on the morning of July 22.

When officers arrived on scene, they located the 52-year-old male victim, Derric West, of Melbourne, in the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The victim would be transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Detectives with the MPD Criminal Investigations Division subsequently assumed the investigation.

As a result of their efforts, detectives identified 61-year-old male Michael Hunter, of Palm Bay, as the lone suspect and developed probable cause for his arrest.

On July 24th, 2023, at approximately 7 p.m., with the assistance of uniformed patrol officers, MPD detectives located Michael Hunter at the residence located at 2254 Henry Street Northeast, in Palm Bay.

Hunter was subsequently taken into custody without incident. Hunter is a 3-time convicted felon in Brevard County.
