BREVARD COUNTY • PATRICK SPACE FORCE BASE – The Cocoa High School JROTC cadets were invited to participate in a special field trip to Patrick Space Force Base to get a glimpse of the facility known as the Air Force Technical Applications Center (AFTAC).
The Air Force Technical Applications Center, based at Florida’s Patrick Space Force Base, is an Air Force surveillance organization assigned to the Sixteenth Air Force. Its mission is to monitor nuclear treaties of all applicable signatory countries.
Many active-duty service members never gain access to this facility due to the top-secret nature of its operations. The AFTAC focuses on STEM career fields such as chemistry, engineering, and marine biology.
During their visit, the cadets engaged in round-robin training, gaining hands-on experience in various areas such as analyzing seismic activity, separating elephant DNA, and the highlight of the day: eating gummy bears frozen with liquid nitrogen.
The visit culminated in a competition where the cadets were given instructions to build airplanes using wood, foam, and paper to determine which one could travel the farthest.
Overall, the cadets discovered new and interesting career opportunities in the Air Force, as well as the civilian sector.
