BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – West Shore Jr./Sr. High School junior Suhina Mitra was selected by the Peter R. Marsh Foundation as a recipient of this year’s National Silent Servant Scholarship Award for her dedication to voluntarily serving her community.
The purpose of the Peter R. Marsh Foundation is to identify and acknowledge an honor student who voluntarily provide invaluable service to others within their communities through their selflessness and generosity.
The scholarship is awarded to public high school students nationwide who exemplify empathy and compassion through volunteering in their community.
The Peter R. Marsh Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Camas, Washington, gives the award to honor students for benevolence, a behavior and set of values that will sustain their families and communities for decades to come.
Mitra has an extensive background of involvement and selfless giving to her local and school community. As the first Youth Ambassador for the Children’s Home Society of Central Florida since 2021, she models humanitarianism and the importance of helping others every day.
Through a web-based campaign, Mitra raised over $20,000 to enhance STEM-related activities at Endeavor Elementary, a high-poverty, low-performing school in our district.
She has been working with students at Endeavor by leading a STEM Camp and tutoring students. One of the students she tutored this past summer was able to get back on her academic journey by growing two grade levels through her work with Mitra.
This success inspired Mitra to establish a West Shore Children’s Home Society Club, where club members can follow in Mitra’s footsteps by giving back to our community at Endeavor and other Title One schools. Mitra is also an active volunteer with Who We Play For, a heart screening group that screens youth before participating in athletics.
WATCH: Suhina Mitra and Elizabeth Hennessey talk with the Friday Night Locker Room’s Steve Wilson about their involvement with the non-profit, Children’s Home Society of Florida. Mitra is a volunteer and is Senior Director of Development & Advancement.
Mitra volunteers her time at these events throughout our county, assisting with checking in students, setting up screening areas, performing screening EKGs, and other tasks as assigned by the Who We Play For team. She is passionate about health care and preventative medicine so much so that she believes she needs to walk her talk! This passion is what led her to volunteer with this group.
Mitra’s selfless leadership serves as a role model to her peers as evidenced by her leadership roles in various organizations. As President of the Junior Class, one of her roles was to organize her class by putting on Prom for the seniors.
As the President of the West Shore Chapter of the Health Occupations Student Association Mitra has expanded membership, and the members are now actively challenging themselves to be competitive members of Team West Shore for State HOSA competitions while also bringing CPR training opportunities to her school.
Mitra mentors middle school students who then go on to compete in Math Counts. As a member of The National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society, Mitra tutors students in grades 7-10 who are struggling in their academics. Her diverse passion for serving others does not stop at the schoolhouse doors.
Mitra expanded her volunteering to the Music MD Program where she performs as a lead violinist with medical staff on her violin for patients in the hospital and advocates for music therapy.
Mitra continuously reflects on what she can do to make her school and community better.
Through her involvement with various clubs, mentorships, and leadership roles she touches a wide cross section of our community. The entire school and community are better because of the example of selfless giving that Mitra has set for herself.
