Significance of the Pier

Richard Stottler constructed the Cocoa Beach Pier in 1962, which measures 800 feet across the Atlantic Ocean. The pier was refurbished in 1983, and Jim Gissy and David Siegel bought it in 2014. It houses restaurants, stores, live performances, and beach attractions such as volleyball fields and lifeguard services.

The location organizes many events, including the yearly Easter surfing festival, and remains a significant cultural and recreational icon on Florida’s Space Coast. 

What to Expect from the Proposed Architecture

Westgate Resorts intends to construct a hotel with 126 rooms, a pool, and a parking garage if the City Commission approves its plan. The hotel hopes to make the pier more desirable, with rooms offering closer ocean views. The design is set to feature luxury culinary options, including a daiquiri bar and a sushi bar catering to residents and tourists. 

Considering the services that Westgate Resort offers in Las Vegas, one might wonder if there’s a possibility of hosting live poker events as it does in its Vegas branch. However, this isn’t among the building plans presented to the Cocoa Beach Board or the City Commission.

The Parking Lot’s Development and Planning

This design promises public safety and accessibility by integrating maintained cycle lanes and wider footpaths. The planning board has stressed the importance of dealing with stormwater discharge and its environmental effects. The plan also involves right-of-way access to promote beach renourishment activities and ensure adherence to domestic laws.

Perks and Downsides

The Cocoa Beach Pier’s new hotel and parking lot can substantially influence the neighborhood. There may be less traffic congestion with the inclusion of the extended parking space. The hotel will also help the economy grow and cut local taxes. 

On the other hand, residents are also right to voice their concerns about the landscape’s blockage and fears of increased vehicular traffic. The resort’s plan, however, has considered these circumstances, with an assessment of impact already done and now awaiting the City Commission’s approval to carry on construction.
