BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The look and sound of water features, whether a simple fountain or an elaborate pond with waterfall, relaxes the mind and renews the spirit. It literally is good for your health, as studies have revealed.

The sound of water has been proven to reduce anxiety and lower the heart rate because it encourages the pleasurable sensation that stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, the body’s nerve network that induces relaxation, decreases respiration and heart rate and increases the abilities of the digestive system.

Focusing on this calming sound dismisses other intrusive thoughts and keeps you mindful of your environs and grounded in the moment. We are attuned to water, and our connection with it begins even while we reside in the womb. A water feature is a win-win that enhances the appeal of a home and soothes and calms family, friends and guests.

Water can be incorporated into our lives in a variety of ways, from compact fountains small enough to fit in a condo to large recreational swimming ponds that connect swimmers with nature while providing a refreshing and cooling dip. Florida Custom Aquatic Services specializes in this gamut of water features.

FLORIDA CUSTOM AQUATIC SERVICES co-owner and biologist Brad Fontaine, above, received a bachelor’s degree in Fisheries Biology and Management from Auburn University and a master’s degree in aquaculture and fisheries management from the University of Arkansas/Pine Bluff. His expertise and experience of aquatic ecosystems and pond dynamics led him to launch his own residential and commercial company specializing in water features.

Owners – and biologists – Brad Fontaine and Adam Klingenberg possess an impressive knowledge of the science behind the water features they build. In 2017, after meeting Fontaine at a local chamber event, Klingenberg joined him at Florida Custom Aquatic Services and this year became a partner of the company, which serves Brevard and Indian River Counties.

No Space Too Small

No space is too small to incorporate the restorative sound of water, for Florida Custom Aquatic Services can install re-circulating garden fountains that serve as focal point by the entrance to a home, or its backyard or courtyard. These low-maintenance features work by pumping water contained in an in-ground reservoir through the fountain and back to the reservoir.

Another option are the Disappearing Backyard Pondless® Waterfalls, which provide the sight and sound of running water without a pond. Why go pondless? A homeowner may be concerned about safety issues or the price of a pond, which cost more than and a pondless waterfall, which requires less labor and materials. Operating costs are less, too, and maintenance only requires adding water every so often to compensate for evaporation.

However, for the ultimate home water feature, a pond represents the gold standard. Florida Custom Aquatic Service’s ponds and water gardens offer a different perspective, yet can still be installed in small lots.

A pond or water garden is not only attractive, but also performs an important role in the eco-system, serving as a home for fish and attracting birds and other wildlife.

One of the newest trends in hardscape design are the recreational swimming ponds.

“It’s very popular overseas and has been getting a lot of attention in this country,” Klingenberg said.

“We believe the demand will continue to increase for these natural ponds. There are no chemicals, no chlorine, which can damage the skin, hair and eyes. Your skin feels great after swimming in these ponds. Along with that, you are creating an eco-system with natural plants that look very beautiful and with less upkeep than a traditional pool. With a swimming pool, you’re balancing chemicals weekly. With a swimming pond, you just add beneficial bacteria once a month.”

Owners of these swimming ponds enjoy the opportunity to swim with the koi they often add to the system.

“Kids love it!” Fontaine said.

Florida Custom Aquatic Services also provides pond and lake management, erosion control and shoreline stabilization and restoration.

Highly Rated

The company has consistently earned five-star reviews from customers such as Larry Cinco.

“They designed a pond with a fantastic waterfall that is very natural looking,” wrote Cinco.

“Their attention to detail is amazing. I watched as they configured and reconfigured each rock so that the look of the pond and the waterfalls became outstanding.”

Julie Ward, who shares her backyard with chickens, goats, pigs and ducks, wanted a pond both her menagerie and her human family could enjoy.

Florida Custom Aquatics did an amazing job installing a brand-new pond ecosystem in our back yard, utilizing our artesian well on the property,” she said.

“The science and creativity that went into this project for us was very impressive. The best part is it has several waterfalls flowing off the large rocks giving us the sound of a waterfall in our backyard. It has a huge wetland filter to keep the water clean even with all the animals using it.”

Adding a water feature improves the appearance of any home or business, but it is also beneficial to people and the environment.

“We believe our water features are healing,” Klingenberg said. “Everyone we build a water feature for loves it.”
