Robert Felder’s Journey: The Vision Behind Bearbottom’s Ethical and Functional Menswear
By Space Coast Daily // November 12, 2024

Despite the growing consumer movement toward social consciousness, fast fashion still reigns supreme. Fortunately, some entrepreneurs choose to follow vision rather than the trends.
Bearbottom is an “adventure-ready” menswear brand built on environmental values and social consciousness. Founded by Robert Felder, this Tampa-based company excels in quality, ethical practices, and community contributions.
The launch of Bearbottom’s vision
Robert Felder’s vision for Bearbottom took root early. As a high school student visiting Bangladesh to learn more about the apparel industry, he witnessed firsthand the nation’s economic struggles and recognized an urgent need. This profound experience left him with a strong desire to make a difference. It planted the seed that would one day grow into a mission-driven business with the power to reach around the world.
Upon returning to the West Coast of Florida, Felder was inspired to make an impact. His opportunity arrived when he decided to venture into the fashion industry.
Felder’s passion for design began during high school when he noticed a gap in the market for affordable yet well-made menswear. Inspired by the lack of options catering to both style and sustainability, he embarked on an entrepreneurial journey, selling shorts out of his college dorm room.
“As an avid outdoor adventurer, I wasn’t able to find clothes with the year-round comfort and features I wanted,” he recalls. “The clothes I needed didn’t exist, so I decided it was up to me to create them.”
As Felder dove deeper into the fashion industry, he discovered that Bangladesh and the surrounding countries actually made most of the world’s apparel. He realized he had both a chance to fill a gap in the men’s apparel market and a platform to help people with needed work.
How Bearbottom gives back to a global community
Central to Felder’s vision for Bearbottom is a steadfast commitment to ethical manufacturing practices. He believed that fashion should not come at the expense of those who make it, which is why Bearbottom has established transparent relationships with carefully selected factories since its inception. Felder and the sourcing team spent significant time vetting these partners to ensure they met the rigorous standards he set for worker conditions and environmental impact.
Inspired by brands like TOMS Shoes, Bearbottom initially adopted a buy-one-give-one model — donating a pair of shorts for every piece of apparel sold. This simple yet powerful initiative allowed Felder to address needs in Bangladesh while growing his brand.
In 2021, Bearbottom transitioned to a meal donation program, partnering with Akshaya Patra to provide meals to people in need in India. “Our method shifted, but our mission remained the same,” explains Felder. “From day one, our goal has been to give back to the community while offering high-quality, functional clothing.”
To date, Bearbottom has donated over 1,000,000 meals in India and more than 100,000 pairs of shorts to children in Bangladesh and India. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bearbottom stepped in to solve a local crisis, providing nearly 275,000 protective masks to communities in need.
The community benefiting from this clothing company stretches around the world and into the company’s own backyard. Recently, Bearbottom launched a special initiative for Veterans’ Day. In collaboration with Southeastern Guide Dogs, the release of the Veterans’ Day “Good Boy Tee” raises funds for a non-profit organization that trains service and companion dogs for US veterans.
Bearbottom aligns quality, versatility, and sustainability
From its inception in 2014, Bearbottom has prioritized quality, ensuring that every piece of clothing undergoes meticulous wear testing. “We take our threads very seriously,” notes Felder. “Our team makes clothes we’re proud to wear daily.”
Thanks to innovative stretch fabrics and performance features, Bearbottom’s versatile pieces look great during the day at work and at night on the town. They transition seamlessly from a rugged adventure in the wilderness to a relaxing afternoon with friends. Bearbottom’s clothes are designed for work, play, and everything in between.
Along with ethical manufacturing, sustainability is central to Bearbottom’s operations. The company often uses natural dyes to reduce environmental impact and champions practices designed to keep its products out of landfills and reduce waste.
“Sustainability is not a buzzword for us at Bearbottom,” Felder explains. “It is a core principle. We actively seek sustainable materials and methods to minimize our environmental footprint. This helps the environment and also helps us create a better product. Every garment is created with durability in mind. Our designs outlast trends and live long lives in our consumers’ wardrobes.”
In an industry often criticized for its environmental and social impact, Bearbottom sets itself apart. Felder and his team continuously seek more sustainable production methods. Most recently, they have begun using post-consumer recycled materials in their designs.
Reflecting on the journey, Felder says, “This vision has always been about the courage to make a positive impact. This spirit is ingrained in the DNA of our brand, and it resonates with a broad audience seeking both style and substance in their fashion choices.”
Robert Felder’s journey from a high school student visiting Bangladesh to the founder of an influential menswear brand is a compelling testament to the power of vision and commitment. Through Bearbottom, Felder successfully merges quality, functionality, and ethical practices. As the apparel industry evolves, Bearbottom represents an example of what is possible when a brand is built on the foundations of giving back and making a real impact.
Felder’s story is more than just an entrepreneurial success; it’s a roadmap for how modern brands can meet the demands of a new generation of consumers while staying true to a higher purpose. Consumers increasingly seek brands that reflect their values, and Bearbottom leads the way in doing well by doing good.
