Program will synchronize seven intersections along Malabar Road, one on San Filippo Drive

BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA — City of Palm Bay officials announced its continued commitment to energy conservation and infrastructure modernization by implementing a centralized Intelligent Transportation System at key intersections in Palm Bay.
Funded through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant, the project aims to enhance traffic flow, reduce energy consumption, and decrease emissions at key intersections across the city.
The EECBG program assists government entities in reducing energy consumption and emissions by supporting energy conservation initiatives.
In January 2024, the City of Palm Bay applied to utilize its direct formula allocation of $160,090 for traffic signal synchronization.
By March 2024, the City was awarded funding through the Voucher Equipment Rebates Program to synchronize seven intersections along Malabar Road and one intersection on San Filippo Drive.
The City of Palm Bay is dedicated to implementing programs that conserve energy in transportation, including the synchronization of traffic signals.

This project will help reduce carbon emissions and improve energy efficiency by reducing stop-and-go driving, reducing delays, reducing congestion, and aligning with the City’s broader efforts to modernize its transportation infrastructure and enhance overall system efficiency. This will result in a better traffic flow between signals along Malabar Road.
Project locations will be key intersections along Malabar Road at San Filippo Dr., Holiday Park Blvd., Wal-Mart entrance, Valor Dr., Emerson Dr., Minton Rd., Palm Bay West Plaza entrance, and the intersection of San Filippo Dr. and Community College Pkwy.
This comprehensive project includes purchasing and installing new equipment and systems to implement traffic signal synchronization.
Project Status
The implementation of the ITS centralized system is underway. All hardware equipment has been received, including the Econolite Centracs Mobility system and Miovision Scout devices.
The Miovision Scouts collect traffic count data to develop new signal timing plans. The City is collaborating closely with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to establish the internet connection required for the cloud-based server, with FDOT actively procuring the necessary equipment.
Additionally, City staff is acquiring SIM cards for wireless Airlink devices, which will be installed at all eight signal locations. Antennas are also being installed on signal cabinets at each project site to ensure seamless communication and operation.
This project is a significant step toward a more sustainable and modernized infrastructure for the Palm Bay community by reducing energy consumption and emissions while improving transportation efficiency.
