BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Youth from Florida Prep Academy will transport its audiences to a “world of pure imagination” with their production of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka JR., a musical based on Roald Dahl’s timeless children’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, on Thursday, February 13, with two curtain times at 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Promoted by Florida Prep’s Fine and Performing Arts Department, Willy Wonka, JR. will be performed on the stage of the Gleason Performing Arts Center, located on the Florida Institute of Technology campus.
The Gleason Performing Arts Center is at 150 W. University Boulevard in Melbourne. Parking is free in Florida Tech lots located just off Babcock Street.
Florida Prep is a preparatory boarding academy school for 6th to 12th graders excelling in “preparing each student for life-long success and to create conscientious, dynamic global citizens and leaders,” the Academy’s mission since 1961.
In Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka JR., a world-famous reclusive candy man named Willy Wonka announces that he will offer the tour of a lifetime through his secret chocolate factory to five children who find a golden ticket in one of his world-famous candy bars.
Against all odds, an impoverished but sweet-natured boy named Charlie Bucket wins a golden ticket. He and his fellow tour members — the spoiled-rotten Veruca Salt, gluttonous Augustus Gloop, gum-chewing Violet Beauregarde, and television junkie Mike Teavee — spend a day traveling with the mysterious and marvelous Willy Wonka and his crew of Oompa Loompas through the fantastical factory.
Adapted for the stage by Leslie Bricusse and Timothy Allen McDonald, the show features lyrics and music by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, including beloved songs “The Candy Man,” “I Want It Now!”, and “Pure Imagination” from the classic film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Seating is general admission based on a first-come, first-serve availability. Doors will open one-half hour before curtain. The show is expected to last under 1-1/2 hours. Ticket prices range from $10 for Adults, $8 for Seniors age 60+/Students with ID, and $5 for children ages 10 and under.
Individual tickets can be purchased online at www.flprep.com or the door. Group tickets are available to organizations and schools by contacting the Performing Arts Classroom, PAC #54, at (321) 723-3211, ext. 154.
