The Bodrick Scholarship Award Assists Aspiring Entrepreneurs
By Space Coast Daily // February 3, 2025

Are you a college student or a group of students with a business or a great idea for one? Would some free money help you expand your business, renovate your location, or make your dreams come true?
If so, then the Bodrick Scholarship Award might just be the support you need.
What is the Bodrick Scholarship Award?
The Bodrick Scholarship Award is a $1,000 scholarship awarded annually by the Khari Bodrick Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Orlando, Florida. A new recipient is chosen each year.
Since the U.S. Small Business Administration has found that $3,000 is the average cost of launching a startup, that $1,000 could constitute one-third of the initial funding you need to get your new business off the ground.
Twin brothers Khari and Omari Bodrick started the Khari Bodrick Foundation to provide critical assistance to aspiring entrepreneurs after becoming successful businessmen themselves. In addition to its scholarship program, the foundation also provides mentorship to young people, helping them become the business titans of the future.
“We know how difficult it can be to launch a business from personal experience, so we wanted to extend a helping hand to those starting out,” Khari says. “Expert guidance is one of the most meaningful forms of support new entrepreneurs can get, and securing adequate funding is vital for any company.”
Indeed, studies show that 90 percent of new businesses fail in their first few years, many due to financing difficulties.
The Bodrick Scholarship Award buoys business
Along with supporting new entrepreneurial endeavors, The Bodrick Scholarship Award has also been known to buoy existing small businesses, giving them the cash infusion they need to expand. For instance, in 2022, the Foundation’s $1,000 grant went to Taylor Stanford, who owns a Pelican’s SnoBalls franchise in Gaffney, S.C., which sells over 100 flavors of shaved ice.
Stanford has used the grant money to renovate the outdoor area around her shop, creating a safe, attractive area for children to play together, build their social skills, and enjoy the outdoors.
Want to apply for the scholarship yourself? Here are the criteria for this year’s Bodrick Scholarship Award.
Criteria for the Bodrick Scholarship Award
The Khari Bodrick Foundation will accept applications for the Bodrick Scholarship Award starting Feb. 1, 2025. The program is open to college students and teams of students currently operating their own businesses or aspiring to become the business leaders of tomorrow.
“We want to recognize, validate, and celebrate ambitious young people who display the entrepreneurial spirit,” Khari says. “Today’s students will become tomorrow’s employers, and new businesses bring the innovations to market that can change whole industries.”
In addition to being or aspiring to become an entrepreneur or business owner, applicants must reside within the continental U.S. and have earned an academic grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher.
Here’s how to put together a winning application for the Bodrick Scholarship Award.
Applications for the Bodrick Scholarship Award
Applications for the Bodrick Scholarship Award require four items to be completed and sent to the panel of judges for consideration. The first is a college transcript showing the applicant’s qualifying GPA. The second is the candidate’s resume.
Next, the applicant should include a letter of recommendation from someone who can attest to their entrepreneurial vision and advocate on behalf of their good character. This reference can come from a variety of different sources, from college professors to previous employers or even from someone in the community, such as a business owner or prominent member of an organization, who can attest to the value of the applicant’s work.
Finally, candidates must write a 250-word essay outlining their business proposition, explaining what makes it special, and delineating how the $1,000 would be used. Some examples of legitimate uses would be participating in a professional conference to help cover the expenses of filing patents or paying for materials the business needs to grow.
“That’s just a partial list,” Khari says. “Just tell us what you need to secure your business’s success. The important thing is that the money would be used to invest in your business or yourself as a business leader, not to finance your personal life or hobbies.”
To submit your application, simply send these four components to thekharibodrickfoundation@gmail.com. Once the application window closes, the panel of independent evaluators will review all submissions and select the winner.
How could you use $1,000?
Scholarships that support college students’ or recent graduates’ entrepreneurial aspirations are rare. That’s why, if you fulfill The Bodrick Scholarship Award’s criteria, you should consider assembling an application and submitting it for their review.
How could you use $1,000 to start or grow your own business? Jot down your idea, ask someone you trust to write a recommendation, order a copy of your transcript, and brush up your resume. That’s all it takes to be considered for this unique opportunity.
