Security Officer Constant features unarmed officers patrolling on foot

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA—City staff and Melbourne Police officers continue to work with Melbourne Main Street and downtown businesses and property owners to find ways to make downtown visitors feel safer.

This month, a private security company was hired to begin a walking patrol on New Haven Avenue in Downtown Melbourne Tuesday through Sunday between 4 and 9 p.m.

Security Officer Constant is unarmed and patrolling on foot. While on duty, security officers will be uniformed in an official capacity for downtown security.

Security officers are becoming familiar with the downtown businesses. They will assist with quality-of-life enforcement issues, such as noise, sidewalk blocking, interference with customers, trespassing on private property, acts of graffiti, and aggressive panhandling.

While on patrol, they will refer issues requiring police enforcement to the Melbourne Police Department and provide an activity report after each shift.

City staff and Melbourne Police officers continue to work with Melbourne Main Street and downtown businesses and property owners to find ways to make downtown visitors feel safer.

This new security service will be primarily concentrated on New Haven Avenue, from U.S. 1 westward to McQuaid Street. Secondary patrols will also be conducted at Campbell Park, Melbourne Court, Holmes Park, and the Crane Creek Promenade.

The new service’s cost is $23,000, and the City of Melbourne Downtown Community Redevelopment Agency is paying for it as a one-year pilot program for subsequent permanent consideration.

This investment in Downtown security is in addition to the $140,000 recently spent on security cameras in the district as part of the Downtown CRA Community Policing Program.

The CRA Community Policing Program also funds security in the City Hall parking garage on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday during the evening and late hours and a dedicated full-time Melbourne Police officer during daytime business hours.

Melbourne Police officers continue regular bike, foot, and vehicular patrols in the Downtown area.
