BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA –After last season’s dramatic double-overtime game, the rivalry between Cocoa and Merritt Island is ready for another chapter.
The Mustangs felt they let last year’s game slip away and have waited an entire year for another opportunity to face the Tigers.

Both Teams Looking to Bounce Back
Cocoa and Merritt Island both lost their kickoff classics last week, but Merritt Island’s defeat was overshadowed by Cocoa’s stunning loss.
Melbourne dominated Cocoa from start to finish, defeating the Tigers 47-16 and making a major statement ahead of the regular season. Although kickoff classics do not count toward a team’s official record, the result raised eyebrows throughout Brevard County.
Merritt Island faced a difficult Class 7A Cypress Bay squad and remained competitive until the fourth quarter. The Mustangs eventually turned to their backups, and the game ended with Cypress Bay earning a 35-21 victory.
Despite the loss, Merritt Island had several encouraging performances as some of its top playmakers delivered on the field.
Last season’s matchup between Cocoa and Merritt Island featured one momentum swing after another. The Tigers ultimately made the decisive plays when they mattered most and escaped with a thrilling double-overtime victory.
This season, however, Cocoa has a new head coach and several new players, making the latest chapter of this rivalry especially intriguing.
Cocoa’s Keys to Victory
Pressure Kevin Verpaele
Cypress Bay did not allow Verpaele to breathe in the pocket, consistently forcing the Merritt Island quarterback to make quick decisions. Cocoa’s defensive front will need to apply similar pressure.

Rivalry games are often defined by momentum swings. If Cocoa can score on its opening possession, it could establish confidence and put Merritt Island under immediate pressure.
